Crafting with the kids

December 3, 2017

One of the projects that we are going to start this Christmas Holiday is that I'm going to craft with the children from the Good Shepard Primary School. The reason I started this project is because we want to improve a lot of things in the school, however, this costs money. So this was my idea: The children can craft little things, I can take them back home and sell them here to raise money to improve the school. With the money we can for example buy books, notebooks and pens.

Together with John Ssentamu I have been collecting the materials needed for these crafts. In Katwadde, John arranged the necessary tools like scissors and saws and materials like feathers, branches and paint. I will also bring some materials such as paint, marbles and some little ropes that are sponsored by the Dental Hygiene Practice of Purmerend.

With these materials I want to prepare a bunch of possible projects for the kids like keychains, bracelets and dreamcathers. I have not completely figured out the possibilities yet, but as I prepare the different projects, I will keep you updated!

Besides the goal of raising money for the school, I think being able to express creativity is very important for children and I think this is a perfect opportunity for them to do this. My main goal is for them to have fun making the crafts, because their lives are difficult enough.

In Uganda is a little rural village called Katwadde. When John Ssentamu moved to this village he started the Good Shepard Primary School for the children who couldn't go to school before for multiple reasons. Wiard, Jari and Iris have been there to meet the community. We want to help both the school and the community so they can develop into the best that they can be. On this site you can read about what we have done and what we want to do in the future. We hope you enjoy it.
